Mariners petitioned the U.S. Lighthouse Service for 10 years for the light. Finally lit in 1889 with a huge first order fresnel lens, the Point Sur lighthouse was in service, safe guarding the water of the Pacific. The lighthouse upon the rock is now a California State Park and can be visited year round.
