Nicknamed the "Lighthouse of President's" many presidents, Monroe, Pierce, Theodore Roosevelt, often used the lighthouse as their summer residence to escape the heat and humidity of DC. The lighthouse served river navigators through the Civil War, the steamboat era and both World Wars.
