HL 324 Harbour Lights Lighthouses

Cape Charles, Virginia

Cape Charles Virginia
HL 324 8x10" 4,000 edition
2005 release Located just at the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay on Smith Island, but best seen from Fisherman Island. Cape Charles is an 191-foot iron tower surrounded by a steel structure to reinforce it. This tower is an active aid to navigation on the Chesapeake Bay.

Cape Charles has had it's share of trials, Originally built in 1828, this is the 4th tower. The first was deemed inadequate in 1852. Construction on the 2nd tower was destroyed by Confederate raiders. Since then erosion has taken the 3rd tower. But a fire in 2000 couldn't shake this tower.
